William BURT was born in Swanage, Dorsetshire, England. He came to
Australia in 1857.
Beryl Stanley says that William lived with his mother Clara (nee
Shott) when on school holidays up until he married. Clara acted as
midwife to the locals for extra income and William also helped with
the finances.
He taught at Deans Marsh Common School in 1875. He was the first
teacher at the Dean's Marsh State School. He later taught at
Birregurra, Yarrawonga and Glen Waverley State School No. 2219 where
he was the head teacher. Both his parents and Louisa's came from
Herston in Dorsetshire, England. He was only 8 when he came out to
Australia. Both families lived in the Carlton area for many years and
both families were quite close. William was very keen on poetry, so
that he would just sit and quote it. William married Louisa Bower in
Tally Ho, Victoria. Each Saturday, William would drive with his wife
and children in the jinker, to the Collingwood football grounds. Glen
Waverley residents would wait at the school gate at night to hear the
details of the game from them when they returned.
William was the first President of Glen Waverley Tennis Club
1905-1911.
William died at age of 71 of heart failure. He had suffered chronic
bronchitis and bronchiectasis. He was buried at Warringal Cemetery,
Heidelberg, Victoria. The gravestone inscription reads:
"In Loving Memory of William Burt devoted husband of Louisa Burt.
Passed to higher service 21st October 1920."
Also:
"Louisa. Beloved wife of the above. Died 30th December 1958.
Forever with the Lord."
By his Will dated 19th November 1910, William left his w.b. house,
land and furniture at Urquhart St (No. 15), his land at Young St.
Coburg (80 ft.) his land at Albion St. Brunswick (180 ft.), his shares
in the Mutual Store, 412, shares in County of Bourke Building Society,
157, his shares in the Sydney Ice Co., 200, his shares in the
Melbourne Cope's Creek Tin Mining Co. 300, his shares in the
Amalgamated Tin Mine, 300,N.S.W. the Company now being wound up, his
interest in the Sizo Company promoted by Edwin Wood formerly of
Rotherham Wood, W.B. & Co., Elizabeth St. Melbourne by A.H. Starr,
agent Queen St. Melb. and a chemist of Sydney, his 125 Elsmore Tin
Mining Shares, all the money (now £150) due from Bramley Wood to him,
all the money due to him from George Bain of Longwarry £133., his
money in the Commercial Bank, Smith St. Collingwood, his goods,
chattels, real and personal estate and effects to his wife and
children, for his wife to manage, and on the remarriage of his wife,
to his children. Witnesses to the Will were Clement Burt, William
Frank Burt, John R. Kennedy.
William's great-granddaughter Andrea Fitzgerald (daughter of Lloyd
Garland Smith) has a framed pencil sketch of a young lady, sketched by
William. (Andrea has herself done portrait pencil sketches). (Lloyd
Garland Smith was also known to write poetry instead of scoring as he
was supposed to at football or hockey matches). A portrait photograph
held by the researcher of William Smith, when a young man, bears a
very strong resemblance to photographs of Lloyd Garland Smith at a
similar age.
An article held by the researcher (presumably from some Education
Department publication) entitled "The best house but one", containing
a sketch of the house and a photograph of William Burt, reads as
follows:
"There was a vacant 5 acres adjoining the school to the east, and
through th persuasiveness of the live-wire head teacher, William Burt,
the owner Mr. Rafferty of Albert Park, offered the land to the
Department for £500. The Government was not then persuaded, but it
bought that same land in 1954 for $12,200! On the land was a "good
substantial brick house of seven rooms" which Mr. Burt lived in for
more than ten years, and found most convenient. "It is the best house
but one in the neighbourhood," he declared enthusiastically to the
Department. Looking back, the present School Committee regard the
house as a perpetual hindrance. It became in time a deterrent to
developing the school grounds, and by 1963, when it was finally
removed, the school pupils were saying it was haunted. No ghost was
ever seen there, but old pupils like to think the spirit of the lively
Mr. Burt still lingered on." Also included in the article was a list
of head teachers over the century, including "W. Burt, 1899".
