SAMUEL BOWERS
Samuel Bowers was born in Tennessee on September 20, 1820. His parents were
James and Feraby Bowers. James Bowers was paying land taxes in Roane County,
near the Emory River, as early as 1817. Because of this it is likely that
Samuel was born there.
A large family, Samuel had at least three sisters and four brothers. The fam-
ily could be described as affluent for the time and area. Records show that
James had land holdings of over two hundred acres, a town lot in the south
part of the state, and over 15 slaves at the time of his death.
Samuel's father died in 1844, there was apparently some disagreement between
his heirs (married children and young ones still at home). The estate was or-
dered sold by the court and the proceeds divided. After final settlements were
made in 1852, Samuel packed his wife and two sons, and moved to Missouri.
Samuel settled in the southwest corner of Newton County, near Seneca. It was
here that five more sons were born to Samuel and Mary. After the Civil War,
in about 1867, they moved again, this time only 23 miles to the east, and
south into McDonald County. Samuel owned one hundred and sixty acres on the
northeast corner, a mile west of (what later became known as) "Bowers Corner",
near Bethpage. Whether or not this was where he settled at this time, we can
only speculate.
During the next twenty years, the Bowers family became established in this
corner of McDonald County. Samuel apparently made a farm out of the rough
Ozark hills during those years. Age was catching up with Samuel, Mary died
in 1886. Soon after, in 1888, Samuel began deeding his farms to his sons.
Samuel died on June 27, 1890, and was buried close to home, next to his wife,
in Owsley Cemetary (now known as Union Cemetary).
