Louisa BOWER was born in Melbourne in Campbell Street, Collingwood and
moved to Sydney. At the age of 10, she came down from her home in
Sydney to Melbourne to live with, and look after her grandparents in
Gipps Street, Collingwood. Louisa returned to Sydney during her
teenage years. When William visited her family in Sydney, they became
engaged. William was 40 at the time and Louisa was 19. William became
head teacher at Glen Waverley State School and they lived there until
he retired. They then moved to Urguhart Street Northcote. When
William died, she went to live with her eldest daughter Clarice in
Redesdale Road, Darebin.
Every year, the family spent six weeks of the school holidays in
Sydney with Louisa's family. At one time they arrived at the main
Sydney railway station and there was a great deal of noise outside.
The children poked their heads out the window to see what was
happening and saw all of Louisa's brothers lined up with an assortment
of instruments, on the platform, and serenading them to welcome them.
About 1927, Louisa bought a blue Oakland tourer. With Clarice
driving, all the children and grandchildren would go off to the beach
or to church, Louisa never drove, but it was HER car. Louisa liked to
play croquet and walked two miles to the Ivanhoe Croquet Ground. The
researcher has a photocopy of the Croquet Club's President Board,
showing Mrs. L. Burt as President 1933-34. When expecting Clarice,
she had to travel 15 miles, by gig, from Glen Waverley to Carlton
because Will's sister Clara was a midwife. When she informed her
husband she was in labour, he told her that he would finish the
lessons and then they would go. When they finally set off, they had
only reached Oakleigh when they knew they could go no further. Will
then had to go into a nearby house and ask if he could hire out their
front room so that Clarice could be born. Clarice used to take billy
tea to her grandfather and uncles when they were stonemasons at St.
Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne.
Louisa was living at 21 Redesdale Road, Ivanhoe, Vic. at the time of
her death. She died of a cerebral thrombosis, aged 88, in Leighton
Private Hospital in Bulleen.
