[1602]
Arno died as a result of a gunshot wound. He hated the blackbirds that roosted
in a tree just off the side of the house and would always carry this old
shotgun with him. The day he got shot, the birds were about, so Arno took the
gun and went though the shed and out the door at the basement that served as a
sort of garage, workshop.
As near as anyone can figure, the wind might have caught the door, so Arno sat
the gun down against the rock wall just outside the door, closed the door and
turned to pick up the gun, when the hammer hit against the wall, pulling it
back and letting go. This caused the gun to discharge, shooting Arno in the
side of his face and head. He died shortly thereafter, before help could
arrive. \
At the time of his death, the sheriff listed his death as a suicide. Family
members, knowing the old gun and how Arno was usually very careful with it,
investigated and proved to the sheriff that it was accidental.
Arno loved his farm and was very proud of it. As a child, I remember walking
with Arno, my father Raymond, and anyone else that would walk, going around the
farm and Arno pointing out all the good things about it. I think that helped
me understand, life is just what you see not entirely what you make it. Life
on the farm was hard work but Arno showed us that pride in your work makes for
a fine crop no matter what.
