J.C. "Callie" Bowers was born in the Success area south of Stella in No-
vember, 1885 and went to school at the Success school house where it now
stands. In 1907 he and Anna Collings were married. Mrs. Bowers was the daugh-
ter of George W. and Ellen Clapper Collings, pioneer settlers of the Bethpage
area. They had four daughters: Lenora Bowers Campbell, now living at Broken
Arrow, Ok.; Ellen Bowers Hoobler of Fayetteville, Ark.; Jewell Bowers Prine,
Bentonville, Ark.; and Mary Lee Bowers Prine of Tulsa, OK. All children went
to school in Stella.
Callie and his brother-in-law, Bill Collings bought the garage from Irl
Carter in 1922. He had the Ford agency in the early twenties. In 1923,
Callie purchased Bill's part and ran the garage until 1958 when he retired.
Firman Lynn "Linsy" worked for Callie as a mechanic for nearly twenty years
and Bill Prine worked for him for over seven years. Corliss Erwin also
worked there during his high school days.
Mrs. Bowers passed away in 1958 at the age of 68 years and Callie passed
away in 1968 at the age of 83 years. Both are buried at Union Cemetary
south of Stella.
Many grandkids and neices and nephews called Callie the nickname "Gouger"
