The only tie of James Bowers to my family is a will from early Greene Co., Tn.
I have not examined the original record to date and am only relying on a
transcript and other research supplied by Van Payne, Puyallup, WA.
It appears very likely that this is my ancestor based on the fact that the
will mentions a young "William" as son, and that our William is basically
the only one found for this time frame and location, and appears to be a
prominent area citizen in his later years.
This is the will as transcribed:
"March 3, 1789 James Bowers made his will, giving five shillings to Auben
Mitchell, Elizabeth Clavens, John Bowers, and Richard Bowers. Two young
children, William and Mary: He gets the cattle; she the sheep. Richard gets
a young filly named Peppergin. Executers: Son William and my wife Kissa"
Executed May 1789 by Kissa
Bowers. Greene Co. TN, CT MN #115 I Bid 139
JAMES BOWERS LINE:
James Bowers died in 1789 in Greene, Co. and left a will which included a son, William (see last paragraph). William Bowers from my line was born in Virginia in 1773 or '74. Assuming this is the same family, Van P's files indicate the 2 sibling born after him were born in Greene Co, Tennessee. The first white settlers in Greene County settled there about 1778 so this would put the Bowers as very early settlers. William's wife may have been Katherine Weems. If that is true their marraige in 1793 puts them in Greene County at the time.
[1603]
James Bowers' Will mentions 6 heirs, 5 apparently children, and one "Auben
Mitchell". This could be another son, first and middle names, a son-in-law,
or someone not related at all.
