1900 McDonald Co Cen lists name as "Samuel J." but other sources indicate
J. Samuel. 1920 Tulsa Co, OK Cen lists his name as James S. To date the only
recorded record of "Joeseph" is the 1880 McDonald Co Cen, where a brother
"James" is also listed.
1995 Correspondence from Washington Univ. School of Medicine Library, St Louis,
cites the 1931 edition of the American Medical Directory as listing "Joseph
Samuel Bowers,M.D., born 1878, practicing in Tulsa at 2812 West 40th St.,
and residing at 3808 S. 27th Avenue in the same city. This Dr. Bowers was
a graduate of Barnes Medical College in 1907." Barnes Medical College is
reported to have existed in St Louis 1982-1918.
According to conversations w Ava Stewart in 1981 "Dr. Joe", cousin to
her father, retired to Siloam Springs and later to Sand Springs,Ok where
he died. She is the source for names of his 4 children. She thought son
Alvin got into some trouble and was shot, similiar to the story Uncle Doc
told about 2 of Alvin's uncles. Will research further.
In 1982 interview w/Flossie Bowers she remembered a Dr. Bowers as the Dr.
at Bethpage, and remembered he later moved to Oklahoma.
"J.S.and J.C. Bowers" are siblings listed as heirs of M.L. Bowers, McDonald
Co Probate records Book G, p65. Also cited as "living in McDonald Co", in a
Mar 1908 entry, Book F, p486.
1909 McDonald Co Atlas lists "Dr J.S. Bowers", "physician at Bethpage".
The family is found at Red Fork, Tulsa Co, Ok in the 1920 Census.
According to Obit of Son Alvin (Tulsa Daily World, 9/12/44), Dr Bowers
was living in Watts, OK in Sept 1944.
Headstone indicates Dr. Bowers served as a 1st leutenant, (Oklahoma?) Medical
Corps in WW1.
