John Adam Bower
and his descendants

GENERATION I

1. John Adam Bauer (later Bower)  [b. about 1725 in Germany; d. about 1801 Shelburne, Nova Scotia] married Catherine [buried 30 September 1805 probably in Christ Church Cemetery, Shelburne, Nova Scotia].  They came to South Carolina in December 1764. 

Adam  Bauer was granted 300 acres of land.  Taken from a copy of his land grant "...do give and grant unto John Adam Bauer, his heirs and assuages, a plantation or tract of land containing: three hundred acres situated in Londonborough township bounded to the North part on land laid out to Balker Merk and part on vacant land, to the East part of land laid out to Christian Zang and part laid out to Abraham Frick, to the south and west on vacant land."  In return for his land grant, dated 19 April 1765, Adam was required to three pounds stirling, or four shillings proclamation money for every hundred acres.  This money was due on each 25th day of March for ten years. 

Adam, his sons Charles and Philip,  joined the British Army in Augusta during the American Revolution, serving in Captain Maxwell's Company.  In September 1782, when the British were forced to evacuate Charlestown, Adam moved his family to Nova Scotia.  They wintered that year in Halifax with several other Loyalist families, and in July 1783 arrived in Port Roseway, name Shelburne later that same month.

It was here that over time, the German spelling Bauer, became changed to the English spelling, Bower.  He built a house and barn, started a small farm and opened a tavern.

 

Last Will and Testament of John Adam Bower

In the name of God Amen, I Adam Bower of the Town of Shelburne in the Province of Nova Scotia, yeoman being in good health of body and of sound and disposing mind and memory and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs do make and publish this my last Will and Testament, hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at anytime heretofore made as follows, to wit, Imprimis I give devise and bequeath unto my dear and loving wife, Catherine all and whole my Estate, both Real and personal of every kind and denomination situated and being in the Province of Nova Scotia aforesaid with the rents, Issues and Profits thereof for and during the Term of her natural life and from and after the decease of my said wife, I give and devise unto my Son, Charles Bower all and whole five Town Lots and one Water Lot lying in the division called North division of the said Town of Shelburne, with the Houses and Buildings thereon erected, purchased by me from Colin Reid, late of Shelburne, Blacksmith.  Item: I give and devise unto my daughter, Elizabeth, the wife of John Dorres, of Roseway River, farmer, a certain Town Lot with the house and Buildings thereon but, situated in Parrs Division, sometime therein belonging to Bartholomew Bower and purchased by me from the sheriff of said County.  Item:  I give and devise unto my son Phillip Bower all and whole the rest residue and remainder of my Real Estate situated in the said Province to Have and to hold the said five town lots and water lot with the houses thereon built unto the said Charles Bower, his heirs and Assigns forever, and all and whole the said Rest Residue and Remainder of my said Real Estate unto the said Phillip Bower, his Heirs and Assigns forever and I do further give and bequeath unto my said son Phillip my Horse and cart with the Harness thereunto belonging and as to the rest residue and remainder of my personal Estate, after the decease of my wife, I will, give and bequeath unto my said son Charles, my daughter Elizabeth, and son Phillip equally to be divided amongst them share and share alike, and I do hereby make constitute and ordain the said Catherine, my wife to be Executrix of this my last Will and Testament.  In witness whereof I the said Adam Bower, the Testator have this my will, set my hand and seal the Eleventh Day of February, in the year of our Lord, one Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety-five.  Signed, Sealed and Published and declared by Adam Bower, the above named Testator as for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other, have subscribed our names at witnesses thereto.

Then came Catherine Bower the Executrix therein named and made Oath that the within Instrument of writing is the true and whole Will and Testament of Adam J. Bower, late of Shelburne in the County of Shelburne, yeoman, deceased that hath come to her hands or possession and that she doth not know of any other and further that she will well and truly Administer the goods and chattels, Rights and Credits which were of the said Adam J. Bower according to the true intent and meaning of the Testator in his aid Testament expressed.  That she will render a true and perfect Inventory of all the Singular the goods of the deceased which shall come to her hands or possession and will give a just account of her Administrator when thereto she shall be lawfully called.

Elizabeth had no children from either marriage.

GENERATION II

2. Charles Bower, born in Germany in 1755; buried 29 December 1842; aged 87 years.  He married Margaret Hamilton on 18 September 1789. She was born in Scotland on 24 May 1772, the daughter of James and Anna (McGeorge) Hamilton, and died 12 July 1862 at age 90.   Charles and Margaret built their home on the Roseway River.

The Hamiltons came to America and during the Revolution James remained loyal to the British, joining their army in 1776 and serving as a guide.  The family arrived in Shelburne in the fall of 1783 and was granted land at the Upper Clyde River.

 8.   Philip Bower was born in South Carolina in 1767;  At the age of 13 he fought on the side of the British during the American Revolution until Charlestown was evacuated September 1782.  Philip married 13 October 1803, Susanna Graham from Annapolis Royal.  Philip died 16 December 1816 at the age of 49, leaving behind Susanna and their 5 sons and 1 daughter.  Susanna married 2nd, Thomas Jones on 24 January 1822. She died 16 May 1850 at age 63.

Note: Charles and Philip each called one of their sons Adam.  Because of this Adam, Philip's son, was always called by his full name, Adam Dorres.  It stuck permanently into his adult life, whereby Adam Dorres Bower became only Adam Dorres.  Through the years, due to misspelling, Dorres became Dorrey.  Adam Dorres Bower's descendants carry the Dorrey surname today.

 

GENERATION III

9.  Catharine Bower, baptized 1 September 1790; died 18 Apr 187_.  She married (1) Captain Robert Frazer and by him had one child, name unknown.  Catharine married (2) James Johnstone.  She died 18 April 187_.

10.  Adam Bower was baptized 19 March 1792.  He married Mary Ann Dexter on 12 Dec 1815.  She was born 1 Jan 1800 and died 28 Aug 1866 at the age of 66.  They removed to Lower Ohio in 1824 after he drew a lot from the Crown on the Southern end of Long Island.  They had 17 children.  Adam died 10 Jan 1878, aged 86 years.  He was buried at the United Church Cemetery, Shelburne.

11.  James Bower was baptized 9 March 1794.  He married Catherine Sophia "Kate" Dexter, sister to Mary Anne, wife of Adam Bower, James' brother.  They settled at Upper Ohio.  James died 9 March 1794 at the age of 40 and was buried 17 April 1837 at Christ Church Cemetery, Shelburne.  Catherine married (2) on 8 Aug 1837, James McLean, who died 8 Mar 1878 at age 88.  Catherine  died 8 June 1891 at age 90.

Philip Bower was baptized 8 June 1800.  He married Abigail Snow who died 9 June 1857 at the age of 55.  On 14 Oct 1858 Philip married 2nd, Mrs. Deborah Smith, who died 9 Apr 1860, aged 46.  Philip married 3rd, Mary Payzant on 3 May 1864.  Philip lived until March 19, 1890, dying at the age of 89.  He is buried at United Church Cemetery.

16.  Margaret Bower was baptized 31 March 1805.   She married John Dexter, born 1802, the son of Captain Elisha Dexter.  John was also a brother of Mary  Ann and Kate Dexter who married Adam and James Bower.  Residents of Lower Ohio, John and Margaret Dexter lived with Margaret's parents and cared for them in their declining years.  Margaret died 2 June 1868, aged 64.  She is buried at the courthouse cemetery in Shelburne.  John died 13 Nov 1876, aged 74.
