Newsgroups
Other Internet search resources are Usenet Newsgroups. There are a number of adoption-related groups available to all members of the triad.
(Note, some browsers do not allow you to read newsgroups)
alt.adoption [unmoderated]. Has the highest traffic of the adoption newsgroups. A spirited discussion group where adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive parents relate their experience and debate the current state of the social institution of adoption. This list is seen by some as a support group, and in particular as a meeting place for those who are searching for information about separated birth relatives and those who can help them. A Volunteer Search Network has sprung up to help coordinate some of these activities.
alt.adoption is also an educational tool in the political sense, to change the consciousness of those who may believe that the institution of adoption is an unalloyed success, a place to point out shortcomings in current as well as past practice and to advocate changes. Politics is not everyone's cup of tea. NOTE: Some people looking for sympathy and support will be disappointed.
alt.adoption.searching[unmoderated]. A newsgroup created as a place for adoption search messages, and search assistance. Search messages are informational postings not intended to generate discussion, but to solicit offline contacts with people willing to help or who recognize the persons searched for. Individual searchers post here, and postings are also generated to this group from registry services offering large volume databases. Submissions to the World Wide Registry run by David T. Gray are automatically posted to this newsgroup, and constitute a substantial fraction of the traffic.
soc.adoption.adoptees [moderated]. This newsgroup is focused on the discussion of adoption issues by adoptees. A team of moderators review submissions to the newsgroup to insure compliance with the group's posting policy guidelines. All postings are routed via e-mail to the group moderators; send your posting in e-mail to <socadoptionadoptees@email.com. Has its own web site.
soc.adoption.parenting[unmoderated]. A group for discussion, education, mutual support, and information by and for adoptive parents. This is an appropriate place to gain information on how to help with issues surrounding adoption, as they occur in the life of the adoptee.
